7 easy Ways For Your Own Fitness Revolution

By: Karolina Starczak                 Jan 01, 2010
As gyms everywhere fill up with fitness hopefuls, how can you keep your New Year’s goal from fizzing out like yesterday’s champagne? If your only plan is to drop (insert desired number) pounds, you may not have what it takes to succeed past that one month trial membership. Try 7 easy ways to plan ahead and to turn that resolution into your own fitness revolution.

Jog Down Memory Lane
Before you hop on a treadmill blasting the infamous Rocky montage, take a look back at all your previous attempts to get in shape. Why didn’t they work and what stood in your way of success?  Jot down any past fitness mistakes, obstacles, and possible solutions to ensure that history doesn’t repeat itself.

Inspire to Perspire
Sticky notes can hold more than reminders to pick up the dry cleaning. Why not write down inspirational messages that you see or hear during the day and make you own motivation collage. Brief notes from your favorite blogs or songs can make all the difference when thoughts of quitting start to take over.

Set the Date
We set meetings and appointments with coworkers and doctors, so why not set some
fitness meetings in your calendar? Set aside time on a daily basis that’s
committed to reaching your goals. Whether it’s a workout, or time to cut up
veggies for healthy snacks during the week, saving a little bit of time will
help set a routine. Before you know it, those daily fitness dates will lead to a
healthy long-term relationship.

Slip Up Plan
Mistakes are inevitable, but that one cookie doesn’t have to turn into an all-you-can-eat buffet. Create a plan with step by step instructions to prevent one incident from sabotaging your whole routine. Let’s say you ate one too many h'orderves at a friend’s gathering. If your plan says to wake up early the next day do yoga for 30 minutes then forget the guilt and stick to the plan.

Bribe and Reward
Health may be our number one priority, but a little something extra for not skipping a workout in three weeks doesn’t hurt. It’s silly to believe that wanting to be healthy will always overpower mom’s homemade lasagna, which is why rewards and bribes are key. Set weekly goals along with small rewards to stay on track, but try to avoid too many high-calorie rewards.

Backing Buddy
They say one is the loneliest number, but it also probably has the hardest time fulfilling New Year’s resolutions.  Having a little support can help overcome obstacles and keep you on track. A little competition isn’t always a bad thing either—especially if you like to win. You don’t even have to go far, find support from other readers and swap stories right here on our forums.

Sleep Yourself Slimmer

In 2004 I hosted a special on ABC called Sleep: How to Get the Rest of Your Life. Doctors from the Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinic put me through a grueling three- day sleep deprivation regimen, to demonstrate how much one’s memory, reaction time, and abilities can be impacted by lack of sleep. At the end of my seventy- two- hour sleep drought, I drove around a special course at the Infineon Raceway near Napa to demonstrate the resulting impairment. I was astonished. I was deluded enough to think that I was more in control than I really was, but I drove like someone who was drunk. Even more to my surprise, I also gained three pounds.

weight gain

Weight gain is one of the most disturbing consequences of lack of sleep. Insufficient sleep tends to disrupt hormones (including leptin) that control hunger and appetite. The optimal amount of sleep for weight control is between seven to eight hours a night. If you sleep fewer than six hours most nights of the week, you can put on up to 11 pounds over six years, say various studies. That may not sound like a big deal, but it can add to the creep of obesity caused by other factors such as stress or lack of activity.
I know there is no substitute for a good night’s sleep. In the modern world, we work hard to live life to the fullest, cramming as much as we can into our waking hours, assuming we’ll catch up on sleep later. But the reality is, you can’t catch up on sleep. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. Trying to make up for it on the weekend is a poor strategy that usually backfires in a bout of insomnia on Sunday night. Sleep is a daily need and should be treated as such. If you have regular difficulty sleeping, sit down with your doctor and try to figure out what’s wrong. Our sleep cycles can be disturbed for a million reasons. Are you under stress? Depressed? Has your life shifted to late dinners out with too much wine and not enough exercise? Have you been traveling across time zones? These can all cause sleep problems.

sleeping pills

A lot of people think sleeping pills are the answer— and they can help in the short term— but there are lifestyle changes you can make, too, and that you should try first. Staying away from stimulants like sugar, caffeine, nicotine, as well as avoiding alcohol before bedtime, can make a difference. Avoid stimulation like computer work or exercise for at least three hours before going to bed. But if you exercise earlier in the day, it can improve your sleep at night. Establish a relaxing bedtime routine. For me, it’s reading a medical journal in bed. And do go to bed at the same time each night. Clean up your sleep habits. You’ll look better and feel better.

The List to Persist

When schedules get hectic and circumstances arise, there is only one way to stick things out—The List to Persist. Buddies may run out of solutions and your motivational sticky notes may grow old, which is why you need the list of true reasons why you want to reach your goal. We all carry the list inside. It holds all our little secrets of moments that crushed us like overhearing a comment about how we looked or receiving bad news from a doctor. They may be painful, but writing those moments and thoughts down can create a list that overcomes any obstacles that may arise.

What are your fitness goals this year?

Good Decision Making Strategies: How to Make Good Decisions Quickly and Effectively

Good Decision Making Strategies: How to Make Good Decisions Quickly and Effectively

How to Make Good Decisions Quickly and Effectively

Nov 18, 2007 Laurie Pawlik-Kienlen
Good decision making strategies include trusting your gut and using your energy field. Here's two ways to make good decisions quickly.

The following two decision making strategies will help you make good decisions quickly – whether you’re deciding who to hire for a key position, what to order for lunch or who to marry – and you’ll be pleased with the outcome. Elaine St. James, author of Simplify Your Work Life, offers advice on making good decisions quickly. These good decision making strategies are effective when you're making both personal and business decisions.

Good Decision Making Strategy #1: Trust Your Gut

“Not only will you find that the decisions you make quickly are the better ones, but you’ll also find you’re much happier and more confident with those than you are with the decisions you make using laborious analysis,” says Elaine St. James in Simplify Your Work Life (Hyperion, 2001). St. James advises keeping a “decisions journal” for six months to determine how long it takes to make decisions and which ones were good decisions. Good decision making strategies – making good decisions quickly – involves tracking your past decisions, both good and bad. This works for personal or business decisions.
St. James believes it’s important to go with your first instinct when you're learning good decision making strategies. It's crucial to trust your gut. Making good decisions means eliminating clutter or “noise”, such as what other people want or what you’ve been programmed to do by your parents or teachers. “Often our days are so filled with unimportant minutiae that we easily get disconnected from our inner guidance,” says St. James. Getting connected to your gut instinct takes practice, which is why St. James suggests the decisions journal when you're practicing good decision making strategies. It will help you make the right decision quickly by revealing how and when you get tangled in unimportant details.

Good Decision Making Strategy #2: Use Your Body’s Energy Field

Good decision making strategies involve your physical body. Using your body’s energy field to make good decisions quickly involves standing up straight, taking a cleansing breath of air, and either letting your arms rest by your sides or placing them against your solar plexus. Breathe in through the nose and out through your mouth. “It helps in the beginning to close your eyes,” says St. James in Simplify Your Work Life. “Not only to eliminate visual distractions but also to help you get in touch with your center.”
Most people’s bodies tilt forward when they experience a “yes” response to a decision. Their bodies tilt slightly backwards with a “no” response. To determine your own bodily response (because you may be unlike most people), simply imagine a “yes” and a “no”. Which way does your body lean?
Once you know how your body responds when you're making decisions, you’re more in touch with you body’s energy field and you’ll be better able to make good decisions quickly. When you’re standing solidly and comfortably, ask yourself if a particular decision is truly in your best interest. Is it in your best interests to hire Jennifer, marry Bill or have a bacon double cheeseburger with super sized French fries for lunch? Good decision making strategies affect all aspects of your life.
“If the decision you’ve made is right for you, your body will start to fall forward ever so slightly; if the decision isn’t right, your body will start to fall backward every so slightly,” says St. James. “The more you work with this, the better you’ll get.”
These two decision making strategies – trusting your gut and using your body’s energy field – will help you make good decisions quickly.

How to Talk to Your Future Self

How to Talk to Your Future Self

By Charles Burke / Source: Command More Luck

Here's how to get in touch with every talent, every ability you ever wanted for yourself, even if you're convinced you don't have a shred of ability in that area.

Physicists and mystics agree that all of time co-exists simultaneously. The way we experience time, with one moment following another moment after another moment, is (they say) an illusion. In reality, all moments of time are hanging around together, and our consciousness is threading its way through and among those moments of time.

(Just stay with me for a bit longer, and we'll be past all this theoretical stuff.)

They also say that there are an infinite number of variations of each possible moment. That's what they call "parallel universes" in the science fiction movies.

As it turns out, those parallel universes are not actually science fiction after all. They're really there-the physicists say so. We just can't usually see them.

But there is one way to perceive them. It's your intuition (or imagination).

You can actually tune your mind in to a talent you don't have, but would love to, and you can attract it to you. There is "another you" in that alternate "now" that has all the talent you wanted but didn't get.

So how do you benefit from this "other you"? How do you siphon off the abilities from the "talent gas-tank" of that other you, and get it into your mind?

The short answer is, you don't.

You don't try to take anything away from anybody. Instead, you reach out with your intuition and imagination and offer to combine your talents with those of that other you. You suggest a win-win merger that benefits you both.

Then you start training those new talents, and-surprise-those very talents appear from out of "nowhere" (but you'll know where).

Do this...

It's simple to do a bit of "day-dreaming" and talk to other versions of yourself. How do you reach them? Just imagine it. You're always talking to that policeman or judge or parent in your head. So why not your other selves in other possible universes? Just imagine them. Talk to them. Offer to do a joint venture -- share some of what you know for some of what they can do.

And then, once you've made an agreement, just accept what comes. And enjoy it.

Charles Burke is the author of "Command More Luck," a book offering powerful suggestions for getting more cooperation from life, luck, and your own mind. Whether you call it synchronicity, serendipity, or just plain old luck, you CAN become more "naturally lucky." Learn more at Command More Luck

Self Fulfilling Prophecies: How Your Expectations Shape Your Future

Self Fulfilling Prophecies: How Your Expectations Shape Your Future

How Your Expectations Shape Your Future

Mar 10, 2007 Laurie Pawlik-Kienlen
New research shows that group expectations are the strongest predictor of future events. Here's how self fulfilling prophecies work to shape your future.

The definition of a self fulfilling prophecy is that negative beliefs predict negative behavior but, surprisingly, NOT that positive beliefs predict positive events. This flies in the face of the law of attraction. The original definition of a self fulfilling prophecy from Robert Merton is "a false definition of situation evoking a new behavior which makes the original false conception come true."
What you believe will come true because you will subconsciously and consciously act in ways that cause the event to happen. Self fulfilling prophecies are powerful.

How self fulfilling prophecies work

This is how a self fulfilling prophecy works: if you think he'll cheat on you, he probably will. There are several possible reasons for this self-fulfilling prophecy. It's possible that you knew going into the relationship that he's been unfaithful in the past. Maybe he left his last relationship to be with you. Or perhaps it's not about him – maybe it's about your lack of trust or fear of intimacy. Whatever the reason for your belief, your actions may set him up to cheat and set you up to get hurt. This is how self fulfilling prophecies work. For instance, if you treat him with distrust and suspicion he'll be more likely to live up to your expectations. If you refuse to believe him when he tells you the truth, he'll see no reason to stay honest. Your expectations shape your future.
Whether he cheats or not, it's not your fault. A self fulfilling prophecy is simply a cause-and-effect scenario that has been repeatedly proven true.

The group effect of self fulfilling prophecies

Self fulfilling prophecies work with groups, too, proving that two is better than one! It's called synergistic accumulative effect, and it simply means that two or more people's expectations are more powerful than one person's. New research from the American Psychological Society shows that group expectations predict events more accurately than individual expectations. Self fulfilling prophecies in families are common. For instance, if your whole family expects Junior to break the law or develop a drinking problem by the time he hits age 7, then he could very well live up to your expectations. This is the group effect of self fulfilling prophecies.

Rated "PG" by the Author. A real woman is true to herself.
She holds her head up high.
She doesn't waddle in pity;
or sit back and cry.

A real woman is a survivor.
She can stand on her own feet.
With God by her side,
she can't be beat.

A real woman has courage;
she has spunk and grace.
Even when she's down,
she has a smile upon her face.

A real woman will make it.
A real woman will excel.
She will keep on striving,
whether she wins or fails.

How to Be a REAL Woman - Associated Content - associatedcontent.com

yayI have seen quite a few articles lately that deal with helping women find a man. I have seen quite a few problems with these articles, the biggest of which being this: they are written by women, for the most part. While there are plenty of women who have found great men (and vice-versa),this does not make them an expert on how to find a good man. Often times, it really feels like "the blind leading the blind."

I wouldn't go to a bakery to get advice on planting crops, and I think that the best place to get advice on men is from a man. That being said, the secret is VERY simple. Be a REAL woman. My advice doesn't apply to all men, but it DOES apply to the men you would want to have as your partner, now and forever.

Being a REAL woman is fairly simple, so without further delay, the secrets to being a woman (in a man's eyes).
1. Be Strong - When a man is ready to settle down, and wants to find a wife, the assumption is that he will most likely want you to bear children with him. That being said, who in their right mind would want a weak woman to help raise their children? We want someone we KNOW will look out for our kids, as well as keep us in line. This in no way means we want someone who is bossy. Quite the contrary, we want someone who is level headed, and doesn't need constant reassurance.

2. Have Confidence - Don't wear make-up, don't look for validation, and believe in what you do. Men don't want someone who seeks our approval. We want a woman who knows who she is. The most beautiful woman in the world can turn any man off with any number of questions resembling "Do I look fat in this dress?" The answer that is always in our head is "You tell me."

3. Figure Yourself Out - A lot of people, both men and women, think that finding their significant other will complete their life. This is far from true. Only YOU can give yourself a satisfying life. There is much joy in sharing.

your life with someone, but don't expect to find out who you
are because of who you are with. The strongest, most intelligent, most handsome man in the world can be your husband, and you could still be lost. If you are totally unsure of yourself, your life, and your beliefs, don't expect to be settling down anytime soon. It won't do you any good, and isn't something mature men are looking for.

4. Men Don't like Projects - We don't want to tell you what to do, how to do it, etc. That isn't to say we won't give you advice when asked, but if at all possible, men DON'T want to change you in any way. That being said, we don't want you to change us either. If you are going into a relationship, or find yourself in one for years, and feel the inkling that you can "make him better," drop that thought. It can only lead to bad places.

5. Don't Compromise Yourself - If you are ever in a relationship, or considering one, but realize you will have to give up part of who you are, then stay away. Often I see men and women falling prey to this. If you can't be yourself, you won't be happy, and you also won't be everything you should be for your mate. If you choose to give something up on your own, that is different. Whether it be smoking, drinking, or college, don't give anything up for ANYONE. Always be who you are, and in this way and this way only, can you find your perfect match. The bottom line is, love yourself for who you are, and love your man for who he is. If you can do both of these things, you will find love. More importantly, however, you will be happy. That is the most attractive quality you can have.

How to Be Charming, Associated Content - associatedcontent.com

How to Be Charming - Associated Content - associatedcontent.com
yayCharming people fare better in life. But what is charm? Is it that little "je ne sais quois" or is it something physical? Can anyone learn to be charming? The answer is "yes" to all of the above. Here are five steps to learn how to be charming.

1, Dress impeccably. In Working Girl, starring Melanie Griffith, when Tess first meets Katherine, her new boss, Katherine explains the importance of dressing right by quoting Coco Chanel and saying: "Dress shabbily, they notice the dress. Dress impeccably, they notice the woman." Dressing impeccably doesn't mean expensive t means simple and elegant. At the very least, you should have one black dress, one strand of pearls, and one set of pearl earrings. The pearls don't need to be real, but they shouldn't look like obvious fakes. If real pearls are out of your price range, then find the most real looking imitation pearls that you can afford. A string of pearls can class up any outfit and pearl stud earrings can take you from daytime into nighttime. Strive to make your appearance neat and clean looking. Even if you're going to wear khaki pants and a button down shirt make sure that both shirt and pants are ironed to get rid of wrinkles and then wear your pearls to class them up.

2. Practice your poise. When you were a little girl, did you ever try walking with a book on your head? Walking with a book on your head is actually good practice to learn poise. Stand in front of a mirror and put a book on your head and then watch your reflection on how you have to hold your head to keep the book from sliding off. Step a distance back from the mirror so that you can walk towards it with the book on your head. One thing you should notice right away is how it makes your steps more graceful. Holding your head up makes you appear to have confidence and a woman with confidence is completely charming.

3. Smile when appropriate. People are more attracted to and charmed by people who smile. But don't just smile to smile. Smile only when it's appropriate such as when greeting or saying goodbye to someone, when listening to a humorous story or joke, or to mark agreement. Smiling when
appropriate lets people know your smile is genuine and not just an affect. A genuine smile is charming.

4. Be outgoing but keep your personal life to yourself. Be outgoing without being pushy. Being outgoing means not being afraid to go up to someone, speak to that person and introduce yourself. But being outgoing doesn't mean dominating the conversation. Get the people you're with to talk about themselves and let them know they have your interest. When people feel that you take an interest in what they say, they'll feel better about themselves, which, in turn, makes them feel better about you. Plus, listening to other people talk allows you to keep an air of mystery. Maintain that air of mystery by keeping your personal problems to yourself. If you do share personal facts about yourself, make them general personal facts and not the kind of personal facts that only those closest to you should know.

5. Be kind. Some of the most charming people are the kindest people. Being kind, even to those that have earned your disdain, will set you apart from the rest. If you never say anything bad to anyone about anyone then people will feel more comfortable around you since they won't feel like you're going to say mean things about them when they're not around. People that are cruel or say mean things have self esteem issues. People that are kind are confident and charming.

The Super Suggestion Technique for Creating Whatever You Desire

The Super Suggestion Technique for Creating Whatever You Desire
By Song Chengxiang
Excerpt from:
The Core Solution Special Report
Now I am going to share with you some strategies that you can use to change your self image. They are going to have enormous impacts on your life if you apply them.
The two strategies that I am going to share with you are some of the best things that I have learned in my entire life so far. They really CAN change your life. I want to emphasize their effectiveness is because most people don’t think they can get much value out of a FREE report. But I promise you that as long as you practice what I am going to tell you…

You will get more value out of this report than what you can get from those $5,000 GURU seminars.
I learned both of these strategies from a man that I really admire, Joe Karbo. The book of his that I read is already out of print, it was published in the 1970s. The two strategies are "DAILY DECLARATION" and "SUPER SUGGESTION". Let’s get
right into these.

Two of the most powerful strategies for changing your
Inadequate Self Image and live your fullest potential
.

1. THE DAILY DECLARATION TECHNIQUE

The reason that we have an inadequate self image is because of our past conditionings, we have a feeling that we are no-good, and we are not worth of the things that we desire. What "daily declaration" does is to give you new conditioning of self-worth and condition yourself to believe what you want can be yours.
This is similar to affirmation, but much more powerful and much more effective. Here are the steps to help you setup your own daily declarations.
STEP ONE: List every thing that you need
Suggestions:
New furniture
Bills paid
Medical insurance
New suit
Write down everything you need...

STEP TWO: List every thing that you want
Suggestions:
$1,000,000 in the bank
A $500,000 house
Rolls Royce
6 month trip around the world
Write down everything you want...
REMEMBER: DON’T limit yourself, write EVERYTHING that you truly want.

STEP THREE: List the personal qualities you need or want
Suggestions:
Ability to concentrate
Ability to finish what I start
Creativity
To be friendly to others
Personal confidence
Write down every personal quality that you need or want...

STEP FOUR: Turn lists into goals
Write all your three lists in the form of goals. Here is Joe Karbo’s check list for writing goals.
1. Do you really want it?
2. Does this goal contradict any other goal I am setting?
3. Any problem with goal cooperation? (would your family be against your goals)
4. Is it positive rather than negative?
5. Is it expressed in total detail?
6. Is it realistic?
7. Is this goal high enough?
8. Am I including the personality factors necessary to goal achievement?
9. Is each goal stated as though already accomplished?
Use this checklist to help you write your goals. Your possible goals will look like this...

Tangible goal: I live in a $500,000 house.
Intangible goal: I am calm and cheerful, I share my inner peace and happiness
with others.

Then you are ready for "Daily Declaration"

Each morning:
1. Immediately upon awakening, read your list of goals as you prepared. READ ALOUD, if this is not possible, then move your lips as you read silently. This is IMPORTANT.
2. After reading each goal, pause, and visualize in your mind your goals already accomplished.
Each evening:
Just before you go to sleep, repeat the morning process.
That is all you need to do to use the daily declaration to change your self image.
As an added bonus, all the goals that you have written down for your daily declaration will come true.
CAUTIONS:
1. Don’t tell anyone about your goals. The minute you start telling others, the energy that you’ve build up is gone.
2. You must do it daily, if you miss a day, the effectiveness will drop dramatically.
Let’s move on to the second strategy for changing your Inadequate Self Image.

2. THE SUPER SUGGESTION TECHNIQUE

A WORD OF CAUTION: The super suggestion technique can only be applied to your intangible goals, and CANNOT be applied to tangible goals. The reason is that this technique works at the lower level of consciousness, if the subconscious
mind is conditioned to believe that your have already had your dream house, dream
cars, etc, it will stop helping you to achieve that.
Before you do the super suggestion, you will need to go to a lower level of consciousness. Here is what you do…
Sit in a comfortable position (don’t lie down, because you will easily fall asleep), scan your body from head to toe. Feel your muscles relaxing as you scan each part. As you feel yourself become quieter, and more relaxed, start count from 1 to 20. Feel yourself go deeper into the relaxed state, and once you reach 20, you will be in the state that you want to be.
That’s how you prepare yourself into the lower level of consciousness. Here are the steps for super suggestion.
1. Take one intangible goal from your daily declaration goal list. Intangible goals are those regarding to your basic personality or character qualities, such as the ability to concentrate, the ability to read faster etc. Choose ONE goal only! To maximize the effectiveness of super suggestion, you should work on one intangible goal only until it is attained. You’ll be surprised how fast you can accomplish that.

2. Take one or two keywords from your goal statement that you choose. You will use the keywords instead of the whole statement while you are in the lower state of consciousness, so that you don’t have to commit the entire statement into memory.
3. Read your entire goal statement
4. Go to the lower level of consciousness using the method I just described.
5. Repeat the keywords several times.
6. Come back to the normal state by counting from 20 to 1. When you reach 1, tell yourself you feel fully awake, totally alert.
NOTE: Both daily declaration and super suggestion must be carried out each day.
Daily declaration is for both tangible goals and intangible goals. Super suggestion is
for intangible goals only. Daily declaration should be done every morning and
evening, and as many times as you want throughout the day. Super suggestion needs only be done once a day, suggested time is before lunchtime. And with super suggestion, you work on ONE goal at a time.

By now, I am done with my original intention of writing this report, which is
helping you see clearly what the root cause of your life frustrations is and let you
know how to eliminate the root cause. I sincerely hope that you can put these strategies into practice, and you will be amazed how much impact they can bring into your life.
Before I finish this report, I would like to introduce you a new tool that can easily make the process of changing your inadequate self image TEN TIMES FASTER!
You probably know that I have been working with the worlds top brainwave entrainment expert Morry Zelcovitch for many years. As a brain scientist, Morry
always has had the passion to use his specialized knowledge to help others live the fulfilling life that they desire and deserve.

The Greatest Success Secret of All Time

By Frank Tibolt
Excerpt from
A Touch of Greatness

Wise old Andy Carnegie, multi-millionaire philanthropist and builder of men (he created 43 millionaires) became an omnivorous reader as soon as he first learned to read.

He particularly liked stories of biography about successful and rich men. He quickly learned that most successful men made a habit of writing down goals and striving for them. He read this so often he regarded it as the secret of success. He preached it to anyone who'd listen.

He went so far as to think up a little trick for finding out how many of his own employees wrote down goals and aimed at them. This he did as follows:

He thought up a questionnaire of 15 questions so worded to make them think he wanted their opinions and suggestions. Here were some of the questions:

• How long have you been working here?
• What prompted you to come to work for us?
• Are you satisfied with your pay and working conditions?
• Do you have any suggestions for improving conditions, or improving the
company?
• Are you earning enough money for the work you do, in your opinion?
• Do you make enough money to take good care of your family?

Etc. etc. 15 questions in all.

But in between the 15 was one, the only one he was interested in. That one was:
Do you have the habit of writing down goals and working to reach them?

When the questionnaires came in, he had his accountants separate the "yes" sheets from the "no" sheets. There were 226 Yes sheets and 3572 No sheets.
Then he checked the earnings of each employee. The 226 Yes sheets were among the 10% of the highest earners in the company. The No sheets were among the 90% of the lowest earners.

After the test was over he confessed his trick and explained he did it to persuade them to become GOAL SETTERS. And it paid off. The production of the plant increased and hundreds began goal-setting. Many of them became rich. Fortythree of them became millionaires.

For a while he was nicknamed the High Priest of GOAL SETTING.

Since that time dozens of other research agencies, colleges, accountants, employment agencies and others conducted similar tests. And they always came out close to these figures of 6% and 94%.

GOAL SETTING... THE GREATEST, MOST VALUABLE AND MOST USEFUL OF ALL SUCCESS TECHNIQUES

This technique applies to any goal — large, small, short range, long range, personal, job or career. It works for just a passing thought. Writing down a mere passing thought works like magic for converting that thought into a goal.

And writing down a goal works like DYNAMITE for converting a goal into reality.
You are already acquainted with GOAL SETTING through reading Lesson 1 [from the book A Touch of Greatness]. That lesson applied GOAL SETTING to writing down the six most urgent tasks for the next day. Your next step is to write down something with a longer range, like a week. Then gradually for a little longer like a month or so. As you see the giant results, you'll automatically apply it to longer and longer range goals.

Don't choose as your first step upward, a goal that your judgment tells you is so high that it's probably unreachable, or one that will take you so long that it might become discouraging. Select one that you're sure you can reach with a LITTLE time and effort.

Many students ask me: "You say most people know that deciding on and writing down a goal is the most important first step toward success. If so many people know that, why do so few people do it?"

That's a logical question. I'll be glad to answer it. I'll call on Edison and Napoleon to help me answer it. Napoleon wrote:
"The most difficult of all tasks, and hence the most rewarding, is the POWER TO DECIDE. It takes little power to do big things. But it takes great power to decide on big things. And deciding on a goal is a BIG thing. It affects us all our lives."
Whatever you want — large or small, material, mental, or spiritual — write it down as a goal then do something every day to help you reach it. That's the nearest thing to that "so called" SECRET OF SUCCESS you’ll ever discover.

The great Goethe wrote: “First build a proper goal. That proper goal will make it easy, almost automatic, to build a proper YOU.”

William. James and other great psychologists tell us: Compared to what we should be, we are only half alive. We are making use of only a small part of our mind power. Deep down inside of us are vast powers we know nothing of and never use.

How can we wake up more of our mind power? By waking up more of our 12 billion brain cells most of which are idle, asleep. Some wake up by themselves. But the surest, most powerful technique is to set goals and to work towards them.

After you've chosen your goal, whether long range, or short range, whether a job goal or some other, you now have the task of realizing it. When your car needs a major repair, your mechanic selects the best tools. And when you want to realize a goal, you also need the best, quickest and surest tools.

And what are they?

Without the slightest question of a doubt, they are PENCIL AND PAPER... writing.

Edison once said: "Most people will go to ANY length to avoid the labor of thinking." My classes taught me: Many people will go to any length to avoid the labor of writing. They'll practice auto-suggestion, positive thinking, meditating, affirmations, even hypnotism. But they shrink from writing.

They are throwing away their sharpest tool for the purpose of realizing a goal. Why? Because writing requires thinking, the most exact kind of thinking.

In fact writing forces us to think. It has ten times the power to force us to concentrate and think accurately, exactly, and meaningfully as mere talking or silent pondering. You can prove this in a minute. Just try to write something without thinking. You can't. Forcing yourself to write harnesses a group of brain cells to produce thoughts and that develops mind power.

The starting point of all achievement is a vision, a dream. That dream continued changes to a desire. And if it's definite, it leads to a plan, which in turn leads to action. But it must be definite and WRITTEN DOWN as a goal. Otherwise it's a mere passing thought.

Unless you write down your goal on paper, you are merely toying ...you haven't gotten serious. I'd like to print in letters 12 inches high this MILLION DOLLAR MESSAGE:

ONLY BY WRITING DOWN YOUR GOAL ON PAPER CAN YOU HARNESS YOUR SUBCONSCIOUS MIND TO GO TO WORK TO REALIZE YOUR GOAL

I can't emphasize too strongly: Only the emotions, feeling, have the power to put a message over to the subconscious mind. Ordinary thinking or talking does NOT arouse the emotions. Seeing your goal on paper involves the optic nerve which is 17 times larger than most other nerves. Therefore, seeing it on paper makes a deeper impression on the mind, makes you remember it longer and it penetrates your inner, subconscious mind.

Many potentially great people remained just ordinary because they never wrote down their goals. And many ordinary men who did write down their goals rose to wealth and some even to greatness. A written down goal has more power than brilliance, luck, pull, even genius.

Writing down your goal is so important that I'm going to remind you, urge you, spur you and coax you to write it down until you're blue in the face. If I fail to motivate you to write it down, I'm a flop as a teacher. If you don't like to write, I strongly urge you to force yourself to write until it becomes a habit. Any skill or habit can be developed and acquired, IF we want it seriously enough to seriously set our minds to it. That requires SELF MASTERY, will power, discipline. Here is a good place to begin developing this SELF MASTERY — one of the two MIND GROWTH traits.

Writing down your goal is planting the seed. That seed will grow and draw all other success aids it needs, like the apple seed that grows and draws all the ingredients it needs. Writing is both physical and mental. It has double power... bringing faster results than any single power. It reaches the subconscious mind.

The subconscious is much smarter than the conscious mind. It's much older, millions of years older. The conscious mind is a comparatively late-comer.
Writing it down gives it momentum, life, substance ...makes it definite and PERMANENT. Mere mental thinking lasts a few seconds. Writing on paper never forgets. Writing it down has two powers, drawing and driving power. Through the subconscious it draws and through the conscious it drives us to do everything we can think of to help realize that goal. It's the quick way.

Writing it down is like hiring a MIRACLE WORKER.
Outside forces, seemingly from nowhere come to your aid. There's an ancient Swiss saying: FATE ADDS A THREAD TO THE CLOTH BEGUN. How? I don't know. Experts have several theories about how a goal converts itself to its physical equivalent. Here is the one most widely accepted:

Your conscious mind is the RULER of your life. Your subconscious mind is the FACTORY. This factory is also a giant COMPUTER. It has thousands of separate facts, ideas, plans, notions, concepts and thoughts. A written down order from the conscious mind signals the subconscious mind to select, compare, combine, adopt, adapt, reject, relate and switch these facts and thoughts around and combine them into new forms, new ideas, plans, and means to realize that goal. It even has cybernetic action like a guided missile. When it wanders off course it self-corrects and puts itself right back on course.

Paper with writing on it never forgets. And writing a goal on paper is in some way related to writing it on the subconscious mind, where it acts like a note to ourselves and projects itself upon our eyes and minds to spur us, urge us and nag us until we take some action.

Writing it down activates a new group of our 12 billion brain cells to go to work and realize our goal. Authorities admit they know very little about just how and why this subconscious mind works. But like electricity which produces light, although they don't know how and why electricity works, they are not willing to sit in the dark until they discover how and why. They're satisfied to push buttons and turn it on.

Many hesitate because they don't know how nature works. No one does. She works in mysterious ways. How she transforms a goal into its counterpart in material form is one of her secrets. As we use electricity without knowing how it works, let's do the same with writing down a goal. Those who do, win; those who don't, fail.

Writing down a goal is like turning on a switch. Pencil touching paper is like joining two electric wires together to form a path for the flow of electric power. This simple act of writing down your goal will do more to realize it than anything else you can do. It's electrifying, galvanizing, magnetizing ...it draws all it needs toward it ...it will make you a new person …it will lift you from creature of circumstance to master of circumstance ... it will release the sleeping powers of your mind ...it will permeate every facet of your life. A note on paper never forgets. Nor does your subconscious mind. It might flare forth weeks later.

Your problem is more than half solved once you get your message over to the subconscious mind. In six weeks it can change your whole life. Seemingly miracles begin to happen. Ideas to help you realize your goal will come from everywhere ...seemingly even out of thin air. Your hopes rise ...you change from drifting to driving. Your whole life seems to surge ahead.

Optimism replaces pessimism, positive replaces negative. Hope blooms and despair flees. Your confidence drives out all doubt — indifference changes to enthusiasm. You're on your way!

One surprising way your subconscious mind works on your goal is: IT WORKS ON YOU. Your written down goal motivates you to action. It seems to set a fire under you to wake you up. It changes your whole attitude and outlook. Writing it down takes less than a minute but does more than 20 years of mere wishing to realize it. It's a literal magnet, a charm that draws everything it needs.

You'll notice your goal working on you right away. Seeing your goal on paper will alert you to notice everything even remotely related to your goal. You'll notice your goal gripping you and everything you do. It will keep you ever alert for new ideas; give you new spring, new energy and zeal, new spirit to permeate your whole being.

So far we’ve been emphasizing the power of the subconscious mind to help us realize our goal. That was proper. Writing it down on paper was the mightiest single action we could take to help realize it. But since we want quick results, we owe it to ourselves to use ALL possible aids. Our conscious mind also has power. Remember it is the RULER of our life.

And remember it was our conscious mind that impelled us to harness our
subconscious mind to help realize that goal. And remember: "Committing your goal on paper will activate both your conscious mind and subconscious minds, and help keep your goal always before your vision."

There are several ways to harness your conscious mind to help you realize your goal. Probably the most powerful one is as a reminder. Keep that goal in mind. That requires conscious effort. Look at that written goal. Be sure to LOOK at it, not merely think of it. Look at it every evening. In addition, write it on several cards.
Put one in your car, one in your bedroom, one in your bathroom, and others where you'll AUTOMATICALLY see them without depending on your unreliable memory.

Your success, and how quickly you'll realize your goal, will depend on how long you can keep your enthusiasm up. Some have enthusiasm for a few minutes, others for a few days, some a few weeks, or months. But the real winners are the ones who keep it up for years. Keep in mind enthusiasm creates energy. Energy impels you from within to take actions that help you realize your goal.

OTHER WAYS TO HARNESS THE CONSCIOUS MIND

Also keep in mind the subconscious mind is deaf to mere thinking or weak wishing. It only heeds strong feeling, emotion. Other methods to harness your conscious mind are:
  • 1. Auto suggestions ... telling yourself, aloud if alone, in positive tones that you will realize your goal. Still better, telling yourself that you are already realizing it.
  • 2. Visualizing, seeing it mentally as realized.
  • 3. Every evening reading the list of all the rich, rewards of your goal.
  • 4. Meditation and affirmations.
  • 5. Talking to people in fields of your interest.
  • 6. Reading trade journals about your goal.
  • 7. Reading success books, articles and stories about men in your field of interest.
  • 8. Listening to lectures, tapes, records on success.
  • 9. Associating with successful people.
  • 10. Try to think up several ways of your own. Thinking is the highest faculty of the mind. Exercise it at every opportunity. It's easy: COMPARE AND COMBINE.
For quickest results, while your subconscious mind is drawing, your conscious mind should be driving you to develop the qualities needed to reach your goal. To this end get up a list of slogans, axioms, proverbs, precepts, maxims, mottos as short reminders. Read them every day.

WE NEED MORE TO BE REMINDED THAN INFORMED

To make the most of yourself keep in mind: We need more to be reminded than informed. All ambitious people, from the lowest to the highest need not merely yearly, or quarterly, or monthly or weekly inspiration, but DAILY reminders.

B.C. Forbes, the millionaire founder of Forbes Magazine, read an average of three success books every week for 20 years. Most leaders in business, industry, education, religion, entertainment, and EVERY FIELD are ALWAYS improving themselves by reading, studying, and seeking inspiration. Most world famous leaders claim they read practically all the new books on success, positive thinking, human relations and other success books as fast as they come out. Napoleon once said: "Show me an army of leaders and I'll show you an army of readers."

Do you remember the last words of Kaiser to the students of Denver University? They were: "After you decide on a goal, put it in writing. Then every evening read it to keep it in mind. The next day, and every day, do one thing to take you a little closer to that goal. Keep that up for five years or until you reach your goal."

"BUT," I sense some of you mentally say, "That's harder than it sounds. That takes the kind of will power and brains you read about in the history books. That might be all right for Henry Kaiser and other big shots, but I don't have the will power and the persistence to stick to a goal and do one thing every day for five years to reach it."

If that's your only objection, I have good news for you.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE BRILLIANT TO SUCCEED

The news I'm going to tell you might be the BEST NEWS YOU EVER HEARD. If you act on it, it might mark the turning point in your life. Pull up a chair and I'll tell you the one big factor behind most hugely successful men and women; that helps turn "ordinary" ability into "extraordinary" achievement; helps change average people into big shots, more often than any other trait. It took me 20 years to discover it. I'll tell it to you in 20 minutes.

Whether you want to get rich, become a star salesman, a top executive or entertainer, your ONLY right starting step is to find or develop some OVERMASTERING GOAL, VISION OR PURPOSE TO DRAW AND DRIVE YOU TO SUCCESS. Otherwise you'll fall by the wayside as all "average" folks do.

This right FEELING OR PURPOSE will speed you ahead further and faster than all the knowledge in all the books and colleges. The more people I analyze, the more convinced I am that the chief benefit of education is to help you find a worthy goal, vision or purpose in life, to give life meaning and to DRIVE AND DRAW YOU TO SUCCESS.

THE REAL CAUSE OF MOST FAILURES

Nothing leads to futility and failure like the lack of a chief, strong aim, goal or purpose in life. In my classes, clinic and correspondence course, I have analyzed more than 2000 people. Eighty-seven percent were accomplishing less than their highest potential because they had no goal or vision to draw and drive them forward.

You'll never even know what your real power and possibilities are until you feel that irresistible pull from an overmastering purpose from within, drawing you forward. That vision or goal, that purpose or feeling will act like a magnet, pulling you from in front, instead of requiring a push from behind. Your powerful subconscious mind will take over and replace the crude will power and DRIVE AND DRAW you forward.

This dominant goal will relieve you of the source of petty annoyances, fears, hates, peeves, excuses, inhibitions, and complexes that lick little men. Whenever an obstacle crops up, you'll automatically think, "How small this petty piffle will look five years from today." Your vision will carry you over obstacles like a jet bomber.
It will free you from the paralyzing complexes and the picayune peeves that flatten floundering floaters.

You'll automatically think with Sir Thomas Buxton,

"The longer I live, the stronger becomes my conviction that the truest difference between the success and the failure, between the strong and the weak, between the big and the small man, that separates the boys from the men, is nothing but a powerful aim in life, a purpose once fixed and then death or victory. And no perfect speech or manners, no culture or education, no pull or influence, can make a two-legged creature a man without it."
